Alcatraz 2012

One never knows where a week of training might take you.  At the end of Leadership training in Stockton, a group of us made the trek to The City and Alcatraz Island.  It was fine time and a great way to end the week.

It was very interesting taking the audio tour and learning about the history of the island and surround area.  It was well worth the time and energy to get here for this unique experience.  The thing that struck me most was not the differences, but how many things have not changed in the way things are done in the Corrections world.

This is what the official ticket concessionaire has to say, “Alcatraz and history go hand in hand. Once home to some of America's most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to the Rock. The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons.”

The shot of luggage is actually from the Sacramento International Airport.  Not exactly what one would expect when coming around the corner in baggage claim, but it does get your attention.
